FISHING

Guinea-Bissau has major fish resources. Its offshore waters being among the world's richest in fish stocks. The oceanic factors of warm and cold current interchanges and mixing and the influence of Bijagos Archipelago ensure a great variety and size of fish stocks.

Guinea-Bissau’s Economic Exclusive Zone has over 70.000 square km size, that is, almost double its overall surface. The 12-mile zone is set aside for national, traditional fishing fleet operation, beyond that zone, foreign operated, industrialized fishing fleets are in operation.

Available bio-mass (1.4 million tonnes) leads to estimates of between 250.000 and 300.000 tonnes of fishing resources per year or the equivalent of 130 million USD. It represents 46% of state revenues (around 5% GDP). Revenues originate especially from the granting of industrial-fishing licences to foreign fleets.

The GBITC encourages the promotion of investment and trade in Guinea Bissau through a policy of flebixility and transparency.
